The “busy season” is generally from late May through October. But there is still life in Stonington after the last leaf falls and the days become chilly and blustery. Both BOYCE’S MOTEL and INN ON THE HARBOR offer accomodations year round, with discounted rates in winter.
HARBOR CAFE is still going strong throughout the winter, 7 days a week. THE SEASONS is open on weekends for brunch and dinner.
THE OPERA HOUSE has plays, music, and many current/first run movies throughout the off season!
Many of the downtown retail shops and some of the galleries are either open through Christmas or re-open for Christmas shopping. ISALOS GALLERY is open year-round!
HARBOR VIEW STORE is open year round!
Two big events are scheduled every winter – the STONINGTON HOLIDAY FAIR in early December showcases artists, crafters, farmers, fishermen, and other local businesses with lots to look at, buy, and eat! WINTERFEST, sponsored by the Healthy Island Project, is held in Februrary and features all sorts of fun and healthy activities as well as a stunning fireworks display.
All of the service related businesses such as the building contractors, PROFESSIONAL AND FINALNCIAL SERVICES, automotive repairs, ISLAND FISHING GEAR & AUTO PARTS, BILLINGS DIESEL & MARINE, and others are open all year.
You can still hike or go cross country skiing in one of the three ISLAND HERITAGE TRUST conservation areas located in Stonington.
ISLE AU HAUT BOAT SERVICES still operates two daily round trips to Isle au Haut in the winter so you can spend the day out on that island hiking or cross country skiing.
Because Stonington is located on the ocean we do not generally get the extreme cold weather that they get elsewhere in the state. Typical winter weather is 30’s/20’s and breezy. Snow fall amounts vary from year to year.
