There is plenty of parking in Stonington but you do need to know where to find it:

* MAIN STREET – Parking is available along much of both sides of Main Street and West Main Street.

* HAGEN WHARF – Parking is available in the parking lot located behind the blue Penobscot Bay Press Building/Fishermen’s Friend Restaurant/Fire House. Please note that the middle section fo this lot is reserved for patrons of the Fishermen’s Friend Restaurant, but there is public parking in the section closest to Main Street and in the furthest section behind the Fire House.

* PINK STREET PARKING LOT – Public parking lot. Pink Street is a narrow road located between Boyce’s Motel and Shepard’s Select Properties right in the heart of downtown. A half block off of Main Street.

* COMMUNITY CENTER – Go up the Opera House HIll, turn right on Memorial Lane near top of lane – a large parking lot is located behind/below the buildings, facing down the hill towards the harbor. You can then walk down a very short path to Pink Street and Main Street. A one minute walk!

* ISLE AU HAUT BOAT SERVICES – Offers paid parking spots on their wharf, Seabreeze Avenue, downtown. Locked and secure overnight.

* There is no parking at the Colwell public water access facility.

* In winter months there is an overnight parking ban on Main Street when snow is forecast.

* Overnight parking is not permitted on Sebreeze Avenue. If you are going over to Isle au Haut overnight or for a while do not park on the street. Parking services are offered by the Isle au Haut Boat Services and RL Greenlaw & Sons nearby at the top of Thurlows Hill.

* The parking lot by the funeral home at the corner of Seabreeze Ave. and Main St. is privately owned.

* Employees and owners of downtown businesses are requested to park at the Pink Street or Community Center lots so that Main St. and the Hagen Wharf parking areas are available for patrons of downtown businesses.

Public Restrooms are located in the basement of the Stonington Fire House (A blue building). Entry is from the Hagen Wharf parking area off of Main Street, just past the back of Fishermen’s Friend Restaurant

The “busy season” is generally from late May through October. But there is still life in Stonington after the last leaf falls and the days become chilly and blustery. We’re a year round community after all! So bundle up and enjoy the quiet time of year in Stonington. The following businesses operate year round:

Both BOYCE’S MOTEL and INN ON THE HARBOR offer accomodations year round, with discounted rates in winter.

HARBOR CAFE is still going strong throughout the winter, 7 days a week. THE SEASONS is open on weekends for brunch and dinner.

THE OPERA HOUSE has plays, music, and many current/first run movies throughout the off season!

Many of the downtown retail shops and some of the galleries are either open through Christmas or re-open for Christmas shopping. ISALOS GALLERY is open year-round!

HARBOR VIEW STORE is open year round!

Two big events are scheduled every winter – the STONINGTON HOLIDAY FAIR in early December showcases artists, crafters, farmers, fishermen, and other local businesses with lots to look at, buy, and eat! WINTERFEST, sponsored by the Healthy Island Project,  is held in Februrary and features all sorts of fun and healthy activities as well as a stunning fireworks display.

All of the service related businesses such as the building contractors, PROFESSIONAL AND FINALNCIAL SERVICES, automotive repairs, ISLAND FISHING GEAR & AUTO PARTS, BILLINGS DIESEL & MARINE, and others are open all year.

You can still hike or go cross country skiing in one of the three ISLAND HERITAGE TRUST conservation areas located in Stonington.

ISLE AU HAUT BOAT SERVICES still operates two daily round trips to Isle au Haut in the winter so you can spend the day out on that island hiking or cross country skiing.

Because Stonington is located on the ocean we do not generally get the extreme cold weather that they get elsewhere in the state. Typical winter weather is 30’s/20’s and breezy. Snow fall amounts vary from year to year.
