Island Independence Day Celebrations

Stonington Town Hall

On Friday, July 4th, the Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce and the Towns of Deer Isle and Stonington will host this year’s Independence Day celebrations. These festivities are all part of a long-standing Island tradition that only gets better with age. 2014’s celebrations will deliver something truly spectacular, so be sure to take part!

What’s on this year: Local artist Frederica Marshall has designed t-shirts and hats commemorating the event, available to buy from Suzy’s Scissor Shack and the Stonington Town Office, and at the parade and Fish Pier. Be sure to grab one while you can, they’re absolutely great and sure to sell out quickly!

First thing in the morning, make it down to the Island Community Center to take part in this year’s walking and running events. Show up at 6:30 AM to register yourself. An hour after that, the walkers start, and at 8:00, the 10K and the Fun Run start.

Cool off after the exercise watching the parade, which, as always, will take place at Deer Isle Village this year at 10:00 AM, rain or shine. Enjoy the floats, the classic cars, and the feel-good atmosphere!

Lunch is served at the Masonic Hall on Sunset Rd. on Deer Isle this year from 12:30 to 2:00—make sure to bring your appetite, because delicious buttery Maine lobster is on the menu!

At 5:00 PM, stroll on down to Stonington’s Fish Pier for yet more excellent Maine seafood, live music, and Amazing Lou’s magic show for the kids! We’ve got a good list of vendors this year, selling all sorts of great stuff: the Clam Committee will be selling clam chowder; Terri Lee Jones will be selling hot dogs, burgers, and soda for the little ones; Odd Fellows will be selling crab rolls and Fisherman’s Friend will be selling lobster rolls; Island chef Kris Burrin will be selling tasty sausage sandwiches; the Methodist Church will be selling cookies; Tempest in a Teapot will be selling tea; Carter Seafood will be selling clams, shrimp, crab, and other assorted seafoods; the Ice Cream Lady will be selling ice cream; and, last but not least, Barr’s Beauties will be having a bakesale for Relay For Life—a cancer awareness fund.

At 9:00, when the sun’s gone down and the stars are starting to appear, and your stomach is fit to bursting, walk on up to Church Street, putt out on a boat in the harbor, or relax on Hagen Dock to a spectacular fireworks show. This year’s show is put on by Atlas PyroTechnics, and it’s sure to be the best one yet. The foul weather date is July 5th at 9:00 PM.

Deer Isle and Stonington are great places to be any day of the year, but especially so on July 4th, so come down and enjoy what we have to offer!
