Stonington has a reputation for being the place to go for seafood and boat excursions of every kind but in more recent decades has also become one of the Maine coast’s premier gallery centers. Several nationally known artists and artisans work in Stonington as well many others of more local renown. It’s a great way to spend a day! Many galleries and studios are located in downtown Stonington or a short walk from downtown. Driving around to the galleries and artisans around town is a fun way to explore the town. Getting Out on the Ocean in Stonington, Maine

ISLE AU HAUT COMPANY

Take a ride out to Isle au Haut, year round, one of two passenger boats the Isle au Haut Co. operates. You can just go to enjoy the beautiful scenery of numerous small islands and the bay on a boat ride to the island and back, at a reduced rate if you don’t get off the boat. One way trip takes around 40 minutes. Stops at a private wharf, the town landing in the village, and (in summer and fall) at the Acadia National Park dock in Duck Harbor. You can also go out to the island for the day and go hiking on the many miles of trails in the park on this wilderness island. The village has a small grocery store and a small gift shop. Public restrooms at the Ranger Station near the dock in the village. There are no overnight accommodations or restaurants on the island. Boat service is year round with two round trips in 3 seasons and five round trips in the summer months into the fall. They also take daily cruises around nearby islands to see lighthouses or haul some lobster traps. Several trips to an island way off shore to see puffins are scheduled every year as well. Also available for charter trips.

Old Quarry Ocean Adventures offers almost all the opportunities to enjoy the sparkling bay off Stonington. Captain Bill Baker has daily rides to Isle au Haut (see above) in summer so you can enjoy the island for the day by foot or bicycle. Charters and other boat excursions to see lighthouses or puffins are available.Their kayaking, canoe, and sailing lessons, excursions, and rentals are also a great way to explore the bay on calm days! PUBLIC BOAT/OCEAN ACCESS RAMP

Launch your own kayak or small boat from the public boat launch ramp “Colwell Boat Ramp” located just behind the Isle au Haut Boat Services buildings on Seabreeze Ave. in downtown Stonington. Please note that due to the small size of the Colwell ramp parcel you cannot park your vehicles and/or trailers there but paid parking is available at the Isle au Haut Boat Services.

Check to make sure weather and wind conditions are going to be safe for your entire day by going to www.maineharbors.com/ and then click on Marine Forecast in the left hand column, then the GYX area, then look at the report for Port Clyde to Stonington. Kayaking out to Isle au Haut, a 6 or 7 mile one way trip through both protected and open ocean passages, is only recommended for experienced boaters. Many small islands are found off of Stonington which offer shorter and more protected passages.
